CIRAD and SVA visiting SHVRI China as some of LinkTADs project’s final activities

As part of LinkTADs final activities and in order to strengthen further research collaboration between LinkTADs partners, two additional short-term visits that were not scheduled originally in WP7 were implemented in 2016 after completing all planned short-term visits.

During the first visit Dr. Julien Cappelle from Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherché Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD) visitied SHVRI between the 6th and 13th of April, 2016. The purpose of this visit was to finalize the experiment protocol of the JEV project “Eco-epidemiology and Risk Analysis of Genotype Shift of Japanese Encephalitis Virus in Pigs and Mosquitoes”, to participate in the sample collection from pig farms. During the visits specific activities took place including the presentation of research progress, participations in laboratory meetings, and visiting pig farms.

The collaboration’s main activities were:

  • Discuss the ELISA method for detection of antibodies specific to JEV genotype I and III.
  • Define a protocol for collection of pig serum samples including the pig farm types, epidemiological landscapes, seasons and locations.
  • Participation in the laboratory meeting of Dr. Zhiyong Ma’s group, which reported on the research progress on swine infectious diseases.
  • Visit 3 different pig farms to know about the conditions of pig farming in China.

During the second visit Dr. Frederik Widén and Dr. Lihong Liu from National Veterinary Institute of Sweden (SVA) visited SHVRI from 19th to 24th of June 2016. The objective of this visit was to exchange progress on porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) and to discuss the potential of a grant application between SVA and SHVRI, as to set up the plan of preparation for a grant application.

Dr. Frederik and Dr. Lihong participated in a workshop on swine infectious diseases. The main activities of the visit were:

  • Dr. Frederik Widén gave a presentation entitled “Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex: What do we know?”. His talk provided a review in detail of the progress on PRDC research.
  • Dr. Lihong Liu gave a presentation entitled “Evaluation of a portable real-time PCR platform for African swine fever virus detection during outbreaks in an endemically infected population”. His talk gave an example of how a portable PCR being used for microbial detection in the field.
  • The visitors took part in the laboratory meeting of Dr. Zhiyong Ma’s group, which reported on the research progress on swine infectious diseases.
  • Both SVA and SHVRI exchanged the research progress on PRDC and set up the plan to prepare application of a collaborating grant.

Dr. Frederik Widén also took the chance to visit a pig farm to know the conditions of pig farming in China.

During the short-term visits, partners exchanged their research progress, discussed the experimental plan of the JEV project, and identified a potential collaboration. The following achievements are to be noted:

  • The protocol of the JEV project was extensively discussed during this visit. Especially, the ELISA method, the pig farm types, epidemiological landscape, seasons and locations for serum sample collection were defined, which would be beneficial to the implemention of the JEV project.
  • The exchange and discussions regarding how to improve understanding of the prevalence, impact and complexity of   porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC).
  • Both SVA and SHVRI agreed to start to prepare some preliminary data for application of a collaborating grant on porcine respiratory disease complex.
